Mark, I am an American and I cheered when I heard the statements coming from the Australian politicians regarding respect for Australian values.
We really have only ourselves to blame for the eroding of our cultures. I think this multiculturalism was well intended, but is now being used against us. It's not so bad when you are dealing with immigrants who are satisfied to respect the basic values of the countries to which they have chosen to immigrate. But when you are dealing with people whose values are diametrically opposed to yours, then you have a problem.
Some naive people think multiculturalism is all about colorful clothing and exotic foods and different music. It goes so much deeper than that. I don't care about the superficial things, but when you've got people like CAIR who openly state they'd like to see Sharia Law replace the U.S. constitution and the flag of Islam fly over the White House, then that is alarming.
We are over in Iraq supposedly to try to bring democracy in the Middle East, and we are allowing people who would impose a totalitarian belief system gain a foothold here. It makes no sense to me. I for one am no longer inclined to be "PC." I welcome immigrants, but not those who want to change America into the Middle East.
