Reader comment on item: Exclude Islamists from the West?

Submitted by John Giannasca (Australia), Dec 12, 2005 at 20:49

As a proud Australian I thank you for saying the things that need to be said. The world needs more poiticians like Peter Costello and less of the poiticians and officials around the world that try to rob us of our identity in the small things they take away from us. I could never immagine Peter Costello allowing Christmas to be tinkered with, or the cross symbol to be removed or the many little things that we allow to apease the muslims. If we dont encourage more people like Peter Costello then we will only have ourselves to blame when we wake up one day and fail to recognise the country we once called home.

On another front, we hve just had two days on racially motivated riots sparked by an incident a week ago where three young surf lifesavers were beaten up by a gang of middeleastern youths. The resulting retaliation of the last two days has left the city of Sydney understanding that it has a major problem.

I believe the problem exists because in adopting our multicultural poilicy in the 70's we never stopped to consider the ramification of it not working or what to do with youths who obviously dont fit in to the western culture that we told their parents it was OK not to fit into. These young people, most who were born here feel that they just dont fit in because they are middle eastern. Acceptance will come with time....if we have it.
