The jizya comes from aya 9.29
"Fight those who do not believe in Allah, nor in the latter day, nor do they prohibit what Allah and His Messenger have prohibited, nor follow the religion of truth, out of those who have been given the Book, until they pay the tax in acknowledgment of superiority and they are in a state of subjection".
Mohammed used to attack communities and villages unannounced, kill and plunder, take women captives and if the survivors who surrendered happen to be chisritians or jews, they were allowed to live in the captured land if they were willing to pay jizya. However it was much higher than zakat. Zakat is 2.5% of savings. Jizya was out right tax as very high.Jizya was not for other non muslims except christians and jews. Others either had to convert to islam or die.
The first Jizya of 50 % was imposed on jews of Khayber , wealthy city of jews near Madina, by Mohammed.
Mohammed attacked Khayber unannounced one fine morning, killed and plundered, and took captured women (Allah allows sex with captured women 4.3, 4.24,23.6, 33.50,70.30)

Bukhari,Volume 5, Book 59, Number 512:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet offered the Fajr Prayer near Khaibar when it was still dark and then said, "Allahu-Akbar! Khaibar is destroyed, for whenever we approach a (hostile) nation (to fight), then evil will be the morning for those who have been warned." Then the inhabitants of Khaibar came out running on the roads. The Prophet had their warriors killed, their offspring and woman taken as captives. Safiya was amongst the captives, She first came in the share of Dahya Alkali but later on she belonged to the Prophet .

The captured land was distributed among the raiding jihadis.

Bukhari, Volume 5, Book 59, Number 543:
Narrated 'Umar:
But for the other Muslims (i.e. coming generations) I would divide (the land of) whatever villages the Muslims might conquer (among the fighters), as the Prophet divided (the land of) Khaibar.

A 50 % jizya was imposed on the surviving jews.

Bukhari Volume 5, Book 59, Number 550:
Narrated 'Abdullah:
The Prophet gave (the land of) Khaibar to the Jews (of Khaibar) on condition that they would work on it and cultivate it and they would have half of its yield.

See Ilana, you made Jizya sound like zakat type administration cost. In reality it was a brutally outrageous penalty on the surivours of massacres , whose land was plundered, and whose women were raped. It was such a huge burden that many of them converted to escape it.
I can understand your motive to sugarcoat "jizya" to protect the good name of islam by following islamic "taqiyya", the deception rule to pull wool over infidel eyes.
