Protecting Own Interests: Tough Lessons Learned

Reader comment on item: ISIS Rampages, the Middle East Shakes

Submitted by Mike Ramirez (United States), Jun 12, 2014 at 22:12

Quote: "...outside powers should aim to protect their own interests, not solve the Middle East's crisis."

The problem is that protecting the United States interests (oil), automatically places us in the middle of the Middle East crisis. Thus, our interests will continue to be threatened for years to come. Additionally, if ISIS ends up victorious in Iraq, the group will more than likely seize control of oil production facilities and hold the West hostage by stopping or limiting oil exports to the U.S.

Tough lessons learned: We obviously did not solve the crisis in the 2003 coalition attempt to "Democratize Iraq". It became worse.

Additionally, I believe that our failures are due to partisan politics meddling in military strategies, political correctness, and failing to realistically identify the ideology of the enemy. This has given America's enemy the advantage to know us better than we know them.
