Why the pot shot at environmentalism?

Reader comment on item: Two Decades of the Rushdie Rules

You know, one doesn't have to be a right wing authoritarian to see and fear the threat posed by radical Islam. And yet, you seem to assume so by dismissing environmentalism so flippantly.

Plenty of people on the left - plenty of people who are 1) secular and 2) extremely concerned about the threat posed by resource degredation and environmental calamity - are your natural allies in the struggle against Islamism. Why mock us as 'cultural relativists' because we think sustainable development and humanism is a better organizing principle for society than ridiculous "Judeo-Christian" myths of a sky-god and a 6000 year old Earth?

Daniel Pipes replies:

My "pot shot" is not against environmentalism. It is against environmentalism as a substitute religion.
