LawrenceReader comment on item: T. E. Lawrence, American Strategist Submitted by Barry Leonard (United States), Jan 18, 2010 at 08:56 Do you really believe in the greatness of "Lawrence of Arabia"? Most books which I have read about the British involvement in the Middle East starting with Egypt and Sudan in the late 19th century, through their horrendous bungling during WW 1 and their collosal arrogamce with France in reframing the Midle East, feel that Lawrence was far short of the over glorifued hero of the movie named after him. He, unlike most of the British colonialists around the world, did live with the native population. Most of the others lived in the countries but in their own enclaves and really did not know the people as was seen by the poor decisions made concerning strategy and alliances during WW 1. However, Lawrence was not a great strategist or statesman, according to most. Note: Opinions expressed in comments are those of the authors alone and not necessarily those of Daniel Pipes.
