Let me look two striking differences as to what the american military can or are willing to do: Lawrence somehow managed to be accepted despite the fact that as a western non-muslim he was rejected. The us militay I believe can never adopt local culture to a limit that Lawrence did. Lawrence loved being in Arabia. Is there anybody in the us military who acutually likes Iraq, or Afghanistan for that matter. Would they really care about the places had there never been an invasion ? Frankly I do not think anyone actually wants to be there ever given a choice. One may learn from Lawrence that these two defects make it almost impossible to achieve anything.
