I wouldn't mind and think like you in the first sentence of your last paragraph, i.e. "I am more optimistic, trusting the stability of a mature democracy and noting that Americans have survived previous conspiracist bouts without much damage. " if I wasn't a jew.

But I am a jew, and history for me is full of very horrible surprise for the kind of people I am. I would like to be optimistic but I have to be realistic. When it is against jews, it can go very bad. This new fashion of conspiracies looks funny, but when in France, people are spitting on jews (again) and are saying "dirty jew" (again), and kids are beat up in school because they are jew, it is not only funny.

Anyway, I hope you are right.
