Surfer ! you have written a good article ...in fact hinduism is a way of life , a system of belief that is flexible enough to be embraced by any humanity...is is not being but becoming....one cannot becomes a hindu just overnight but gradually , by adopting and living a hindu way of life and a hindu system of belief to the extent he or she can follow it ...or having faith in any hindu god according to his or her inclination ...A POPULAR MISCONCEPTION is that Hindus worship Idols ....not at all .Hinduism is as scientific as any pure science could be ...Hindus don't worship idols ...they worship supreme God which is abstract, through the image or idols which are tangible and concrete, because we cannot reach or think of anything abstract without the help of something concrete or tangible....as in science all abstract concepts are expressed by different symbols, like Gravitation is expressed by ' G' , or temperature by ' t ' , the list is endless .When we think of ' beauty ' or ' truth ' which are abstract concept , only ' beautiful things ' and ' truthful deeds ' come to our mind because we can not reach the abstract without the help of concrete....the hindus worship the Supreme God in different forms or incarnations according to the mental level of maturity and inclination of the worshiper ...hindus read and respect The Upanishads , The Gita ...they believe in endless Karma (work) .world peace. spiritual peace , efforts to become more perfect as a human being in works and beliefs...showing compassion to the distressed or even to the animals ...so they generally don't slaughter animals...however , there have grown some bad practices among some sections of hindu society like ' the caste system ' mystic practice ' etc which HAVE NO RELIGIOUS SANCTION IN THE ORIGINAL HINDU SCRIPTURE LIKE THE UPANISHADS OR THE GITA ... these are social evils which have been tactfully given religious tags by unscrupulous men for their vested interests of exploiting people specially who are ignorant of the true self and essence of HINDU RELIGION...
