"I believe that Islam is a great religion that preaches peace," George W. Bush told an Arabic-language television station today, recalling the "religion of peace" phrasing he used in the aftermath of 9/11.
Comment: (1) This statement comes as a keen disappointment to me, who has for years been chronicling the president's increasing realism about the nature of Islam. (2) But it does not come as a shock, for he has been steadily abandoning the more robust policies of his middle years. (3) One worries to think where his presidency will end in just over a year.
