I fully agree about the "curious and despicable pas de deux " implication that it was all a "mistake." But one need not go to Italy for examples of such pschopathology, if not moral perversion. How about the father of Nicholas Berg, the young Pennsylvanian whose beheading by Zarqawi was broadcast on the internet, said that he took no pleasure in Zarqawi's death, since it was just more violence. (The moral perversity is even greater in this instance, since the father is a member of the antisemitic ANSWER.)
