Terrorism and its victims

As much as we became accustomed to victims-of-the-sword and disaster victims and young faces adorned with a black frame - the heart is torn at the sight of the cute faces of Abigail and Daniel staring at us over the pages of the newspaper with the "of-blessed-memory" attached to their names.

There is no point in shouting into the conscience of those who throw grenades into cars who carry kids to school or to a trip, and their senders. We have known for years the Arab revolutionaries (Fatah is now celebrating his birthday) carrying the Arab Revolution on the knives of child murderers and grenade launchers on innocent civilians.

We will not be surprised even if the "humanists" from the "new left" do not get emotional at all about the shedding of the blood of infants - the blood of Jews is cheap. And not just the blood of Jews. Every day we read about intra-Arab terrorism in the Gaza Strip and this year it has amounted to many dozens of Arabs who have been murdered, including breastfeeding women holding an infant in their hands. The terrorist gangs did not succeed in harming the presence of the Israeli government in the Gaza Strip.

The Government Authority and its various arms operate in various fields and have in their power to mark serious achievements in all areas of their activity. It is inconceivable that the killers will succeed in deterring Israelis from fulfilling their duties and demonstrating their presence both in the security field and in the areas of civilian activity, and the terrorist gangs know this. Care must be taken, however, that there will be no people who have no role in this in places prone to disaster. To this end, appropriate means of information and warning must be taken care of. The horrific murder of the children's duo Daniel and Abigail more sharply raises the need to take all possible measures to preserve human life, so that no murderers in the Gaza Strip will be harmed.

The funeral of Abigail and Daniel will take place tomorrow on the Mount of Olives
The curfew continued in the northern Gaza Strip

- By Menachem Shmuel -
The two children, Abigail and Daniel (Mark) Arroyo, who were killed in the murderous attack on Saturday in the Gaza Strip, will be buried quickly on the Mount of Olives ...

Ezra Yanov, Maariv writer, adds:

The curfew in the northern Gaza Strip between Gaza and Jabalia is still ongoing. The security forces' investigation revealed that a terrorist, holding a grenade in his hands, was hiding behind a pillar near a carpentry shop, about two meters from the main road in front of the UNRWA buildings at the exit from Gaza.
The terrorist waited until the Arroyo family's car approached the scene, then managed to throw the grenade into the vehicle through the right windshield.

Security forces found behind the electric pole the grenade safety, made in Russia, and discovered the trace of the terrorist.
The military administration in the Gaza Strip takes the act of recession very seriously. In the curfew, careful scans are conducted to catch the grenade thrower. Also yesterday, arrests of suspects in acts of sabotage that were discovered in the curfew area continued.

Drama and Death in the Strip - TIME

A YOUNG family and a misguided boy met on a road in Gaza several months ago. The encounter, which stunned all Israel, is reconstructed by TIME Correspondent Marsh Clark:

Robert Aroyo, his wife Preeti, and their children Marc-Daniel, 7, and Abigail, 4, had lived in Israel only eight months. Born on Malta, raised in England, Aroyo abandoned an advertising job in London to bring his family to the land of promise, where he felt they all belonged. Settled in the Tel Aviv suburb of Kiron, the Aroyos often spent Sabbaths touring their new country. One bright Saturday they set out south to visit a seaside nahal, or fortified camp, in the Sinai below El Arish.
Mahmoud Slieman Zak, 15, sat in the shade of an old building beside the highway that bisects the strip and gossiped idly with a friend. He was an indifferent pupil in school and wanted only to become a fulltime member of the Palestinian guerrillas for whom he had already been on eleven grenade-tossing missions. That morning Mahmoud fondled a grenade, wondering whether a target would present itself.
Carefully, the Aroyos checked with Kiron police before setting out on their trip to the nahal called Yam. The police saw no danger in their driving back to Tel Aviv by way of Gaza. Aroyo, therefore, was unconcerned as he reached the town of Gaza. The only thing he noticed on the road ahead of him was an old abandoned Seven-Up bottling plant.

Mahmoud's heart leaped. From the orange license plate on the slowly approaching car, he knew it was an Israeli and not a silver-tagged Gaza vehicle. Mahmoud' s friend, Wasfi Mussa Masharawi, 16, sauntered out into the middle of the street, forcing the car to slow to a crawl. Mahmoud tossed his grenade into a rolled-down window. The grenade had a four-second fuse, and he was gone before the explosion.
Aroyo braked his car to keep from hitting the boy who had walked out into the road in front of him. He never saw the missile that flew through the open window of his Cortina and landed on the back seat beside the children. All he heard was a muffled explosion and Abigail's cry, "Daddy, Daddy!" The back seat was bloody when he looked. Beside him Preeti moaned, "My back is broken."
Wasfi Mussa Masharawi watched indifferently as the man staggered out of the car, cradling a bleeding girl in his arms. He ran away when the man pleaded with him for help.

Abigail was dead by the time the Israeli military helicopter arrived. Marc-Daniel died soon after. Aroyo buried them on the Mount of Olives, smoothing the dirt over their graves with his own hands. Then he hurried back to the Beersheba hospital where his wife was being treated for injuries to the spine and pelvis that took six months to heal.
...After the tragedy Aroyo was a crushed man, hut he strained to be compassionate. "I do not hate the people who did this," he said.

The young terrorist from Gaza who will reenact the murder of the children of the Arroyo family - Holding an orange instead of a grenade - was a member of a network that threw grenades at schools and on vehicles

- By Ezra Yanov -

In front of a group of TV photographers from Israel and around the world, Mahmoud Suleiman al-Zak, a 16-year-old high school student from Gaza, recalled the murder of the Arroyo family's children on January 2 this year.
The reconstruction was made yesterday at the hands of the suspect, with an orange in his hand instead of a grenade.

Mahmoud, a student at Jaffa High School in Gaza, has been a terrorist operative for a year in the "Liberation Forces," which operated mainly in Gaza, and mostly high school students.

The network engaged in throwing grenades at schools to disable classes, as well as throwing grenades at Israeli vehicles.

Mahmoud told police investigators yesterday how he hid behind a power pole, near the main road, at the northern exit from Gaza, in front of the offices of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency. Holding the orange given to him, he showed how he threw the grenade at a car, which resembled the Arroyo family's car.

In a monotonous voice he recounted how he managed to thread the grenade through the car window, two feet from his hiding place, and then demonstrated how he escaped into the alley.

He also recounted how he put together two members of the organization, 18-year-old Tawfiq and Ramazin, who signaled him from a distance towards Gaza on the arrival of the Israeli car.

A short time later, the police also brought these two suspects, to complete the reconstruction.
In front of the cameras and the photographers, they told about their actions, without the slightest hint of remorse or excitement from the criminal murder. Foreign journalists, through an interpreter, asked Mahmoud al-Zak why he had done so. He replied that he was told to do so. He also said that after the murder, he received NIS 50 for the "successful operation." His two friends, who were on the lookout, also received sums of money from the network's commander.
