Israel needs the kind of leadership that inspires victory

Reader comment on item: Poll: Israelis Want Victory, Preferably without Paying the Price

If one looks back at some crises that have challenged the free world, there have been a few leaders who have risen to the challenge. Against Hitler, there was Winston Churchill, a man whose eloquence was matched by his angry defiance and moral outrage. He rallied Britain in her darkest hour, and inspired her to carry on despite daunting losses. Against Soviet tyranny, there was President Reagan, outspoken in his denunciation of the Axis of Evil. He was able to arouse the moral indignation of people around the world and was bold about a strong military deterrence. The Soviet Union collapsed and her empire shrank.
Israel has long faced forces that are every bit as evil as have ever existed, and, as with other chronic totalitarian threats, the public is weary from the tension and unconvinced that victory is possible. Israel needs a leader who can persuade logically as well as spark passion. This means giving people confidence that they can win, that the forces arrayed against them are evil but weak, that victory is possible through perseverance. Israel has a great military, superior technology and the intangible advantage that free people have over the subjugated. And, victory should not be held hostage by fickle world opinion.
Netanyahu has been smart and tough, but maybe the task is too daunting for an ordinary mortal. Let's pray for a miracle and maybe there'll be one.
