Let's also not forget that issues of authoritarianism are not limited to populist (right wing) parties, but are present in establishment parties including those on the left. The policing of speech, censorship on the internet, hate speech laws, extensive government spying programs, ignoring referendum results etc are all evidence of this. A not insignificant amount of people in the EU would deem the EU itself an inherently authoritarian institution.
