Dan:

The only reason I can think of for Hamas starting this war is to distract public attention away from the US/Iran nuclear negotiations.

Another possible reason might be the stalemate between ISIS and Syria. Waging war on Israel has the potential to distract ISIS' enemies toward a common, traditional enemy. It also restrains Arab League states from circling the wagons with Israel in order to confront Iran and/or the Brotherhood (ISIS, Al-Qaida and all the various flavors). It does so by stoking the local sentiment in these countries against Israel; a reflex action HAMAS can count on.
