Lord Pipes! My Jedi Master - What is Thy Bidding?

Reader comment on item: John Esposito and Me

Submitted by RobW (United States), Oct 21, 2013 at 18:27

Dear All:

As a long time fan of Dr. Pipes, and recent twenty year resident of Wahabbi controlled Saudi Arabia who is endlessly annoyed by the bizarre antics of John Esposito - may I only say - that I would have been proud to encounter Lord Pipes in his dark garb and kneel before him to ask -

"My Lord! What Is Thy Bidding - My Master'?

If Dr. Pipes should read this comment - may I ask his opinion on the meaning behind the Arabic symbol the Rub El Hizb. Its the two superimposed - and slightly rotated square symbols found throughout Islamic architiecture. I know it's used in the Quran to separate verses - but I read somewhere that it grew out of ancient Arab envy over the 6-sided Star of David - so Islam came up with an 8-sided version to show Islam's superiority over Judaism.

Can anyone point me to any such article of research on this view?

My regards and best wishes for the continued wit and wisdom from the good Dr. Pipes.

RobW

Daniel Pipes replies:

Good question about the Rub' al-Hizb and whether it has a connection to the Mogen David. I am unaware of a study on this topic.
