Is Turkey Europe or no?

Reader comment on item: Is Turkey in Europe?

Submitted by Farhad Lahafdoozi (United States), Jul 17, 2013 at 17:04

No, Turkey is not in Europe because geographically , almost, 95 percent of Turkey is in East or in between.

The reason that Turks would like to be a part of Europe is that Once they were Ottoman Empire which included big portion of today's Europe; the second reason is that since Attaturk's times, Turkey has shown to be a modern Muslim country which is very different from other Muslim countries like Egypt or even Iran. This so called "modern Muslim" make Turks believe, mistakenly, being democracy as well. The reality is Turkey is not that democracy that they boast. Turkey is one of the biggest " jail for journalists"; Turkey has one of old fashioned society; Turkey has had big human right issues regarding Kurds and Armenian. Turkey still has its

special mentality towards Greece and Cyprus.

However, Turkey, comparing to the other Muslim countries, does very well. There are signs that shows Turkey is different from before.
