Schari'a and Democracy

Reader comment on item: Islam and Democracy - Much Hard Work Needed

Submitted by Gabriel Ange (Germany), Feb 8, 2011 at 08:49

Dear Mr. D. Pipes,

in your article dated Feb. 7.2011 you write: Many are asking whether islam is compatible with democracy? The answer is yes, itis potentially, but it will take much hard work to make this happen. Islam and democraty, are like the poles of the magnet, they never meet.

Unfortunately, I want to prove just the opposite, based on the historical events of the islam religion plus some Hadith which are reported as the prophet's words: [Support your muslim brother if oppresed or oppressor! The jews are apes and the christians porcs. The infidels, jews and christians, watch them on every corner and kill them because they don't believe on Allah and his prophet] In over 100 islamic countries claiming to be democratic and all signaturies of the UN conventions as well asA.I., human watch and others, but behave just the opposite.

Watch what is happening in Malaysia. Following the street's claims, the Supreme Court of the country forbid the weekly journal, the Harald, the use of the word "Allah" in their writing, claiming that this name is a monopol of islam, upon which several churches were sacked and burned. If we only think that the word Allah is the trnslation of the aramaic and jewish name "Elohenu" which means "Our God" in use since the first century a.D. among the jewish and christian inhabitants of the arab peninsula. Further you write: Just as christianity became part of the democratic process, so can Islam. But the Koran is not the Evangelium. While the Islam is, like Dr. Wafa Sultan (a syrian psychiatrist) wrote in her book: An Allah that hates. In the entire teachings of Jesus Christ, we do not read one word or expression talking about violence. Jesus is the ever biggest Master and Teacher of Democracy. Look his first teaching the sermons on the mountain starts with, what we may call: the constitution of the Gospel base of the Christianity, which is a real Democraty.

Then the moslems make lately so much uproar for the word Schari'a, ignoring the whole meaning of this word and how it came and reached the Koran. The Schari'a is an old hebrew word which denotes the ten Commandements which Yahweh descended on Moses on the mount Horeb in the Sinaï desert. As proof, the Koran mentions over six times: And before him (the Koran) the book Moses, as guide and mercy and this one (the Koran) is a book translated in an pure arab language (of the Torah) Further more the Koran relates in 29 of his Sure, the peripeties of the Exodus wich all the legislations of the books Exodus, Numbers, Leviticus and Deutoronomy. In few words we can compare the Islam like a film with a dark tunnel full of ghosts that turn the people to fear Allah and his messenger. And in your last paragraph, you write: Yes, with enough effort and time, muslims can be as democratic as Westeners. Just an everlasting illusion and Disillusion.
