Gaza all over again

Reader comment on item: Turkey, Still a Western Ally?

Submitted by Griswel (United States), Dec 6, 2007 at 09:28

The State Department urges including Islamists in elections, they win, and the State Department downplays the results of the disaster. To be fair, however, the Turks slide into Islamism owes far more to the EU and its conditions for joining. This has a far more immediate effect on Turkish internal policies. The result will be that Turkey never joins the EU - because the EU rejects it by a policy of perpetual postponement - but does mortal harm to its secular nature in the attempt.
