Reader comment on item: Why Oslo's Hopes Turned to Dust

The merits of Dr. Pipes' approach should be self-evident to anyone who is really interested in a peaceful solution. The problem is that the U.S. government (as well as the last few Israeli governments) seems to lack the courage and/or moral clarity to demand of the Palestinians that they accept, without any preconditions, the existence of Israel AS A JEWISH STATE and forever renounce the use of violence. The U.S. and Israel must be able to stand up, without any obfuscation or equivocation, and say to the Palestinians and the entire Arab world that without this clear and unequivocal statement on the part of the Palestinian leadership (backed up by swift arrests and imprisonment of Palestinians who murder Jews or call for the murder of Jews), there will be no more talks, no more meetings, no more road maps, no more diplomacy and most importantly, no possibility of anything resembling a Palestinian state. Period. They must then stand firm. They must tell the Palestinians that until they are ready to do these things, they, the Palestinians, are on their own, to be dealt with as the Israelis see fit. Unless and until the United States and Israel make this demand - and show once and for all that they mean it - this insane situation will not end.
