Academic objectivity

Reader comment on item: Five Years of Campus Watch

Submitted by Anton du Preez (United States), Sep 20, 2007 at 10:58

It is tragic that so many academic institutions have evolved from centres of learning to centres of influence.

I believe that the original concept followed by universities were the stimulation of thought, not the conveyance of ideas. The academics should promote all thinking, not just thinking that agrees with their viewpoint. As an outsider I believe that too many academic institutions has as a goal the promotion of their way of thinking rather than the promotion of independant thought.

Surely the ultimate compliment to an academic is that one of his/her students prove him/her wrong.

Good luck with your efforts
