Title VI
Reader comment on item: [Middle East Studies:] Wasted Money

Submitted by Jack Salem (United States), Jun 26, 2003 at 22:33

Thank you once again, Dr. Pipes, for an incisive article on Title Vi. I wrote as follows, to the congressman about my thoughts:

As a past president of Americans For a Safe Israel some years ago, I attended several conferences sponsored by the Middle East Studies Association (MESA). As one who values and cherishes academic freedom and dissent, I was appalled at the vitriolic attacks on the United States.

These attacks were not scholarly balanced criticism of our policies, but blanket condemnations of the USA. We couldn't do anything right. It was as though the Hamas Mullahs were speaking! And to think that these were the teachers of our youth was especially troubling.

I, therefore, urge you, Mr. Congressman, to closely manage Title VI spending, amend the Higher Education Act to deny Title VI funding to any university or center that boycotts the NSEP, and to reduce their allocations as a way of expressing our displeasure with their tendentious criticism of our policies. Let's instead spend that money at the Language Institute in Monterey, CA.
