When Muhammad had but a few followers in Mecca ( 610-618/619 A.D) he had a peaceful, reconciliatory tone towards all of his opponents which included Christians, Jews and even pagan Arabs. Towards Christian and Jews, Muhammad affirmed the deity of Christians and Jews was one and the same as his. Towards the Arab pagans, he praised their gods in an effort to win their conversion. Neither cases was successful.
So why did he turn to mass murder (jihad?) Is this a better example than all the prohets before him? He was the only one who ever killed those who rejected him....he cannot be the apex.
