RationaleReader comment on item: Monitoring Iraqis Living in the United States Submitted by Monty (United Kingdom), Nov 21, 2002 at 15:49 The degree of scrutiny applied to any individual should be based on a set of relevant criteria, determined by qualified actuaries. We already submit to this in many aspects of our lives, because it is perfectly legal for insurers and pension providers to make risk assessments based on our age, gender, lifestyle, zip code, marital status, salary, profession, health record, social class..... ad infinitum. We accept this in the commercial domain, because we support the fairness of safeguarding other people's money. We should accept the equivalent in the security domain, because we should support the fairness of safeguarding other people's lives. To be young, male, able-bodied, and Muslim is statistically significant in the terrorist risk assessment. Those who bleat about profiling should reflect on the fact that they are offering us no other discriminants.
