Reader comment on item: Monitoring Iraqis Living in the United States

Mr. Pipes,

The challenge of history is that we learn from the events that are recorded. In Vietnam, American forces suffered from the enemy's designed concealment amongst the innocent masses of the local populace. Such is the case today with the Arab-American community. Within this group of acknowledged innocent and law-abiding individuals are presumeably hidden enemies that would do this nation harm. I say presumably because it happened in this manner on 9/11. And in the absence of intervening action by American homeland defense organizations, it would happen again. Ms. Zahn is obviously not a student of unconventional warfare (or perhaps history as well). Such patterns of exploiting the civil liberty sensibilities of the target nation are very well practiced by adversaries that are forced to operate in such countries where civil liberties traditionally abound. I love my civil liberties as an American. But I would rather be monitored by the Government for meeting a certain profile than be bombed by a terrorist. The sacredness of civil liberites falls behind the sacredness of life. Thanks for your outspokenness.
