Reader comment on item: "Working Undercover as Christian Peace Activists"?

Submitted by Tawfik (Canada), Dec 20, 2005 at 11:18

I have to say that the West is convincingly detached from any understanding of the consequences of the actions taken by the Christian Peacemakers, or any one who unwittingly chooses to venture out into a volatile and dangerous environment, without reflecting on the consequences.

It seems truly irrational for anybody, whether Christain, Muslim, or Jew, to actually make their way to Iraq, under the pretentious label of "Christian Peacemaker", and not understand the risks involved with doing so. Is this some sort of "martyrdom" on the their part. A sacrifice for mankind in the name of Christianity or peace. Please save me the spirituality, I can almost feel myself revolted by the outcome of this kidnapping. In other words, no body in their right mind, should be even contemplating setting a foot in Iraq. Let us not forget that many Arabs and Muslims, who went on business purposes met their fate in a violent way, just like the many Westerners who did. If you are unwilling to accept that some people, are so irrational as to put themselves in the middle of a war-ridden country, full of insurgents, and put a neon light on them, by calling themselves the Christian Peacemakers, then please do the honour of venturing out youself.

Point being made, these insurgents want to make a message. It is a matter of publicity, no matter who you are and where you come from. As long as you represent some sort of outside force that is in the country as a result of the war, you are a target. Just accept this!
