ISIS may die, but ... Islam marches onward

Reader comment on item: ISIS is Collapsing

I believe Dr. Pipes may indeed be right in his prediction of ISIS' demise. But we must not lose sight of the larger threat posed to Western civilization by the animating force behind this latest Islamist scourge. Several data points reinforce the hypothesis. At no time in over a millennium has Christianity been as close to extinction as today. Bethlehem is no longer safe for Christian pilgrims to visit. Paris to Dakar has wisely relocated to South America. Each are tiny cuts, but we are bleeding to death from 1,000 of these tiny cuts.

Cogently, Dr. Pipes has, to his credit, observed that the stealth Islamism proffered by the Recep Erdogans of the world represent a more worrisome menace than the overt violence of al Shabaab, al Qaeda, ISIS and the like.

Our erstwhile ally Saudi Arabia pours billions pumping Islamism into our political, educational and media systems. The physical boundaries which used to protect the West from dar al Islam have all but evaporated. Our southern border with Mexico has metamorphosed into a swiss cheese non-entity from whence almost anyone can enter our nation carrying almost anything, for any purpose along with them.

Is this not the stuff of nightmares.

Perhaps worst of all, we seem to have forgotten what makes Western, pluralistic, secular, democratic society superior to all other forms of governance. Our world in the West is not just different from Islam. In every measure that matters, its better! But how many of our citizens -- particularly our youth graduating high school and university -- recognize or even believe this to be true. In our 21st Century torpor we've so blurred the lines of moral equivalence that political correctness has all but eclipsed common sense. ISIS may indeed soon fall. But until we find the clarity of vision to stand up for our precious Judeo-Christian civilization, Islam will continue to metastasize to rise and rise again in all its virulent forms.
