Whilst I agree with much of what the writer says, I have to remind us all of the prime importance of the "general will". If Islamists strike a chord with people living in democracies such as are practised in the west, then they can indeed glean power and ultimate victory in establishing their own kind of democracy.

The west has some vulnerability. In my opinion those vulnerabilities include;

corruption...corporate entities lying about product

exploitation..... e.g.medications only available to the rich

feminism.....where equality of the sexes becomes an argument for subjugating males

legal absurdity......... a drift from justice to simply the application of law (clerking)

Should there be a general decline in the support of our public institutions, then what the writer has said will become meaningless in the new reality. And as J J Rousseau observed ...."Once freedom is lost it can never be regained".
