Hi Mike

You are very correct that Q5:32 has been a great embarrassment to the Muslim ulama and they really did not know what to make out of it. And the source is really Sanhedrin 4 or

"He who saves one life... it is as if he saves an entire universe. He who destroys a life... it is as if he destroys an entire universe" TALMUD - Sanhedrin 4:

However early on the ulama agreed that the subject here would be the Jews and the story of Cane and Abel and that if one kills then one is killing not just the victim but the potential sons and daughters of the victim and this is why the killer is "destroying the whole universe".

Later on and because the ulama realized that the disaster here is this verse comes from what they called the Quranic layer of al-Isra'eeliyat or the layer of the Qur'an that is muktabasa or derived from sources external to the five books of Moses and to the ulama this was a disaster and this is why the trend has been to disregard the introductory clause where it says that Allah ordained for the people of Israel and just mention that Muslims should not kill other Muslims

But again we dealing with a plagiarist
