Islam has always been a religion based on aggression as a mean of expansion. This is an extension of the tribal mentality which Islam united under one banner, and thus bringing multiple independent tribes under one idea similar to what Genghis Khan did. The tenets' of the religion are theological adversarial, which is the reason why later scholars of the faith had to develop of the system of "Abrogation". This is the reason why you have such diverse practice of the religion by the faithful. The entire theology of Islam quickly falls apart when scrutinized by a western theologian.

You cannot separate the founder of any religion from that faith, since it's practiced based on their directives. The teachings of Mohamed as stated earlier are only an extension of the social order he lived under, and are irreconcilable with the practice of peace.
