Dr. Pipes,
I am amazed and astounded at your Kissinger style real politik.
Though I understand from a technical and pragmatic viewpoint your concerns, I must admit I am utterly astounded by your stance; namely, that you would prefer a leader who is apocalyptic to the point of holocaust; a rabid anti-semite who wants the destruction of Jewry and a believer in the appearance of the final iman in preference to one who is more moderate in his attacks against Israel.
Would you have said the same about Hitler if he had had an opponent who was more moderate in tone?
I don't think so.
I disagree with your expectation that a madman will be a better point man around whom opposition could coalesce. Others have hoped that in other generations, and the result has been genocide. The thinking was, "once people see how terrible this man is..." Sigh...
I am strongly disappointed in you and your reasoning.

Daniel Pipes replies:
You seem to miss the point that I see Ahmadinejad more as press secretary for the regime than decisionmaker.
