Reader comment on item: Berbers as Anti-Islamists and Anti-Arab Nationalists

Submitted by Peter Herz (United States), Mar 19, 2009 at 15:21

When I see a mass movement of the Amazigh back to the Christianity a large portion of their ancestors followed before the Arab conquest, I'll believe they're contrary to the politics and ideas of their region. Not before.

Last time I checked, the Almoravids who established a brutal and bigoted regime on southern Spain in the Middle Ages were Amazigh, not Arabs. It's a little like the Kurds. We are sympathetic to them now that they've borne a lot of wrath from nasty Arabs like Sodom Insame--oops, Sadam Hussein-- and forget that the Kurds were the folks who did a lot of the dirty work for the Ottoman Turks during the Armenian and Assyrian massacres in the 1890's and during World War I.

I wonder how many Amazigh sstood up for the Jewish communities of the Maghreb when they were being expelled after Algerian independence; or for the right of Muslims to convert to Christianity.

Let the whole Islamic world stew in its own juice. Their internal conflicts are none of our legitimate concern.
