I think Mr Lott was commenting on the way that the paper proffered the bare minimum form of words of apology with no admission really of their editorial sloppiness. Mr Yusuf would have been involved in that too and his blog indicates he saw nothing wrong with his initial comments but only joined in the apology because it was a sensible thing to do when threatened by Dr Pipes!!! A mimimalist comment on a minimalist apology.
