Reader comment on item: Europe vs. America

Submitted by Peter Verkooijen (Netherlands), Jul 11, 2003 at 08:29

...and I am surprised that people still don't see this or play down its significance. This development started right after the end of the Cold War with the acceleration of the European Unification.

Europe is desperately trying to save its 'European model' which is anti-capitalist, anti-liberal and anti-democratic. The fears about diminishing European influence in the world and the believe in transnational government to counter that trend are similar to those of European socialists, catholic corporatists and fascists in the 1920-30s. In other words, antiglobalism is national socialism.

Note that national socialism was never nationalist in the sense of the liberal nationstate; it was a racial continental nationalism, very much like the Arab nationalism that took its inspiration from Europe.

Europe does not exist. The only thing that can unite Europe is defense of 'the European model' and therefore hatred of America, whose values threaten that model. Europe is directly responsible for fanning the flames of anti-Americanism, in Europe, in the Arab world and in its former colonies.

BTW, I am European. I was born in the Netherlands and live in Amsterdam. I am desperately trying to get out, because it gets scary here.
