Reporting of American Casualties and the negative impact on Americans

Reader comment on item: Does Rumsfeld Favor Getting U.S. Troops out of Iraqi Inhabited Areas?

Submitted by Lou Marsten (United States), Jan 1, 2007 at 14:15

I think that the daily and repetitious reporting of every American casualty in every news organ in the United States and around the world is a most effective propaganda effort which has so disheartened the American elecorate.Had the same process been employed during my own (as well as so many of my family members) experience at the outset of world war II, as well as my experience during the Korean war of the late 1940's and early 1950's, it would have had disasterous consequences for all of western civilization!

We were admonished, in those days, to be secretve about our own efforts in those conflicts ( I remember things like " a slip of the lip might sink a ship " udgl ).I would like our Federal Government to admonish those who publish those details, and ask them to assess their motivation beyond their expressions of "the public's right to know", and "their 1st amendment rights to Freedom of the Press".I would ask them to remove the scales from their eyes and assess it all with the all important question," Does this particular report help the enemies of our country?"

I would ask them a second question," will the publication of this or that report strengthen or weaken our resolve to prevail in this conflict?" What an astonishing difference I see between the behavior of the news organs ( and those who populate the so-called "entertainment " industries, of those years of my youth, and those of today!.there are a few exceptions, of course). I believe this President is absolutely correct in his assessment of the threat we face, and I believe that he must and will keep his resolve to see that we are ultimately successful in disabling our enemies, and creating a solid beginning to a more hopeful future.I resolve to help him all that I can because I believe the threat is real and ominous!

Sincerely

Louis Marsten
