Caliphate means supremacy of religious law where Muslims can form a government. Most pious Muslims (even Westernerized Muslims) want an Islamic government headed by a Caliph in their countries (like Pakistan), but hardly anyone thinks about global dominance or things of that sort. If some terrorists want the caliphate, this is nothing new. The first sect in Islam - the Kharijis - wanted God's rule too in time of the second Caliph - Omar.
