Let the Music Play... Mr Pipes?

Reader comment on item: The Erratic Career of Western Music in Iran

Submitted by Heather Clark (Canada), Dec 19, 2005 at 21:30

Dear Mr. Pipes:

Thank you for this recent update from beneath the veil that is Iran.

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, President of Iran (in his finite wisdom) has made the decision to ban Western music across his hobbled country

I think we're on the same page when I say this, Mr. Pipes:

Music to my ear is the voice that speaks to my heart, words on a page? A caress, embrace, a pinch, sometimes a slap.

To have that freedom to listen, read, taken away from me?

I would revolt.

Sir, I ask this question most sincerely:

Do you think the decision Ahmadinejad has made, to ban Western music in Iran will be a catalyst? I mean, it starts with Western music, but this man has no boundaries for what he can/cannot do. Do you believe the pendulum will swing back? Do you think Iranians will continue to let themselves be oppressed by this man? I'd like to believe they'll finally make a stand and say "Let me up! I've had enough!"

Your thoughts, comments, would be greatly anticipated, appreciated, when you've a moment..

Thank you, Mr. Pipes.

Best,
Heather Clark

Daniel Pipes replies:

Yes, I think this needless provocation will only alienate more Iranians from their government, and so will serve, at least in a minor way, as a catalyst.
