The history of Turkiye is being written in the current vernacular of the current leader, Erdoğan. That the history does have alternate versions dependent upon the point of view or observations, it remains to be seen if Erdoğan is ultimately allowed to insist his is the only acceptable version or if not, whose version will be: Wikipedia's?
From this observer's posture as a modern student of alternate versions of history, Turkiye remain an enigma, from before the Ottoman's assumption of authority to the fall of such when Allenby entered Jerusalem and asserted a false sense that 'Christianity' had somehow redeemed the Crusaders and Jerusalem was now an international resource to be remodelled in some multi-national religious talisman that was to be protected by the winning empires of the time: even as wrong as all were in that thinking.
After Attaturk had his chance to model a new Turkey and his successors struggled with making that a reality, Erdoğan entered the picture and essentially said 'not so fast.' Within a generation, everything Attaturk attempted was erased. In many respects, Erdoğan represents the endurance of a strict Islamic devotion that can be projected to Islam in general. Thus, Dr. Pipes' assertion that Erdoğan cannot be trusted has roots.
Elsewhere, there are assertions (some by this observer; there are others) that the battle for the 'integrity' of a greater Syria continues for ulterior reasonings beyond that of al-Asad's raging malfeasance as a leader and the border issues of Turkiye, and the designs of the Russian for Middle Eastern control (for his own valuation of energy reserves), it cannot be eliminated that Erdoğan has his own version of the expected results in which Turkiye will not be sidelined for any possible participation in determining a 'new holyland' after the 'Palestinian' narrative is rewritten to suit the survivors' expectations of dominance in the middle east.
Of such is the warning that may be assessed in allowing the Russian to expand into Syria after battling the Ukraine. Think about how Erdoğan is looking to take advantage of that, as much as any other of his ambitions of empire are forming in his head. For that, he demands respect; fail to respect his position and face his consequences if he does not get his way. Remember Khashoggi and thoughts of his protection?
