Some benefits of Ukrainian victory

Reader comment on item: Victory – An Obsolete Concept?

The Biden administration, while much too slow to commit military resources, has finally stepped up with some generous aid, and the Ukrainians are putting it to good use. If Ukraine is victorious, and it's looking that way, there will be some major benefits.
First, it will look good for the Democrats, and at least partially wash away the stain from the Afghanistan debacle. In addition, quite a few conservatives will have egg on their faces for their stinginess in refusing to support some of the Ukrainian aid packages in congress. And some conservatives, like Tucker Carlson, and President Trump, will wind up looking like small minded Putin trolls.
Beyond partisan politics, a Ukrainian victory will also help preserve world peace by giving authoritarian regimes like China, Iran and North Korea second thoughts on the costliness of aggression. Ukraine has helped firm up the West's flagging reputation when it comes to strategic resolve. After all, Ukraine alone, with only material assistance, took on a job that NATO was afraid to confront directly, and has acted heroically.
Plus, in an analogous manner to what Dr. Pipes has pointed out with regard to the Palestinians, a Ukrainian victory will help Russia by forcing it to concentrate on getting its own house in order rather than seeking destructive external outlets for its national purpose.
Finally, any victory of of David over Goliath, of good over evil, gives people around the world hope and confirms their faith in divine justice.
