Maybe it's time we defined "Occidentalism"

Reader comment on item: Overcoming Orientalism

Submitted by Dave (United States), Sep 6, 2022 at 16:45

Occidentalism: That would be a stereotyped way of defining western culture as racist and colonialist, while overlooking its many superlative achievements in the arts, sciences, economics, democracy and human rights. The widespread preference for using the term Orientalism, a term that denigrates the West is symptomatic of the demoralization and self-hatred among western intellectual elites.
People like John Esposito and Soheil Hashmi have exploited this ignorant and neurotic tendency; they've made successful careers as carping and woke Occidentalists. Let's unabashedly stand up for the best civilization ever and punch back.
