What news from the East?

Reader comment on item: Covering Muslims

Submitted by John Harvey (United States), Jun 2, 2022 at 12:23

To judge from Daniel's review, Covering Muslims would seem to be a superficial and silly book. Allow me to make a couple relevant points.
1. on the one hand, if coverage of Muslims tends to be unfavorable (let us avoid the wrong use of the word "negative"), that is because newsworthy things that Muslims do as Muslims tend to be bad, such as violent acts and demands for intolerant measures. In saying "as Muslims," of course, I mean to distinguish between, say, an action of the "Islamic State" and Aziz Sancar winning the Nobel prize in Chemistry.
2. on the other hand, we should remember that it is usually the worst in any group that makes news. It is not the countless physicians helping their patients who get big headlines, but the doctor who is found guilty of sexual assault.
