Nuclear Option Always Considered An Offensive Tool - Even When Considering America's First In Time Use

Reader comment on item: Take Vladimir Putin's Nuclear Threats Seriously

Many will decry the notion that America's first in time deployment of nuclear weapons was a dehumanizing act of mankind in an age of world wars being fought for reasons of empire took humanity to task for allowing such inhumanities in the first place by not stopping those ambitions of empire from going rogue.
Here humanity is experiencing rogue ambitions again and what is the world doing? Nuclear ambitions are swirling in teh background by natioanlistic sensibilities who have demonstrated certain insensitivities to the potential aftermath if, for sme reason, any inhibitions to deployment of nuclear forces are advanced for the same reasons World War II Germany was developing their program for world domination. America going first in 1945 demonstrated the inherent incivilities of such a use and that lesson should never be wasted. The problem is America appears to have been the only nation to acknowledge that lesson: all others have yet to develop the courage necessary to keep it from happening except in the mistake of thinking they could get away with it. However, as a possiblity the nuclear option may yet be deployed for tactical reasons, those that threaten need to be challenged at every turn or they will act when the timing of a softened response may be determined when the issue are just right. Those circumstances are just exactly what is seen now, just as Richard Pipes hypothecated from his era of just such expectations.
