3 Colossi for our Times

Reader comment on item: Putin's Invasion Scrambles the West

Like brutal Titans of old, strutting across the known world, wreaking fear and havoc, 3 colossi have emerged from the pages of myth and legend unleashing their mayhem onto our world, and, as Dr. Pipes writes, leaving our caretakers scrambling to comprehend what has occurred and how and where we will fit into this new world of chaos.

The latest Colossus, a giant of destruction but a midget in size, seeks to turn back the clock and regain a lost Slavic Empire simply because, in his adolescent egocentric mind, size makes might. This particular battle is ongoing as I write with no end or outcome apparent as yet. Still, that "silver lining" is there, after all. His appearance has jolted the West out of a somnambulant "I'm ok-You're ok" Weltanschauung just waiting to be crushed. But the danger is now clear and present: We have been warned.

A more sympathetic creature, in my estimation, is our next giant to make his appearance. After all, he simply
wanted to " clean up the swamp" – a reference to a once radiant idea of having a "Shining City on the Hill"- an idea grotesquely disfigured slowly into a swamp starting in the 1960s. A largely misunderstood figure, three actions of his stand out in my mind as of fundamental importance: the moving of the US Embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem – the total gutting and cleaning up of the Dept. Of Veterans Affairs, in particular the Veterans Hospitals – and reversing economic, political and military affairs that had tended to put America last, into putting America first in all spheres. For these and many other reasons, history will someday accord him the real place of honor he merits. His psychotic vilification is simply undeserved.

Finally, the first to emerge this time seemingly from the mists of time right at the start of the 21st century - a slippery, hooded figure who also had dreams of reclaiming a lost civilization by going back to its origins and forcing the rest of the world to comply with its dictates. He has long since been turned into fish food, as we all recall, but his epigones still roam our world, seeking submission from all.

Nearly a quarter of the 21st century has now gone by with our three colossi dominating the headlines. Overarching all these developments, of course, a totally unexpected curse, has been the ever looming "Pandemic" with new strains popping up in what appears to be a monthly cycle. The "City by the Hill" appears further out of reach then ever before, doesn't it?
