Complex Memories of Complex Times

Reader comment on item: The Six-Day War: Personal Recollections
in response to reader comment: An odd twist of fate

Submitted by M Tovey (United States), Jun 20, 2021 at 10:28

For this young American, who has all sorts of military memories from his uncles and all, June was more remembered for the anxieties demonstrated for the one uncle that train while D-Day was in the offing and later went in after the Battle of the Bulge and crossed the Rhine with Patton. Being a young high school student, the impressions of war were contrasted with watching all the John Wayne movies from WWII with all the 6 o'clock news outtakes. Not until later when pulling a lottery number 326 and witnessing the 1973 Yom Kipper war as an adult did the issues of wartime fiascos begin to take a mind numbing toll on why mankind seems to be on this bent for reaching the 'eve of destruction.'
None of these memories are fond, but perplexing; and seeing this post even later then when first published sends sense that does not end to a relief that things have gotten any better. Indeed, adding to the incomprehensible aspect that this is still going on and trying to explain this to the generation of my grandchildren as if they need to be prepared themselves to assume some posture of understanding, there is only one place to direct anyone to gain any sense of reality. Isaiah in the Tanakh is the tell.
