Bring democracy to Islamic countries

Reader comment on item: Jewish Life in an Increasingly Muslim Europe
in response to reader comment: Anybody worried?

Dear Dr Pipes,

your reader 'worried' wrote in 2008 that he was worried that Muslim population in Europe was increasing and Muslims were not integrating with the European democratic ideals. Worried was right in 2008 but I think we do not have to worry whether Muslims should integrate with democratic ideals of the West. Time has now come that we demand that Muslims should pursue democratic ideals in Islamic lands. It is very difficult to enforce the right behavior on the immigrants because their true thoughts often times may not be revealed and because when they come to the western (and eastern) democracies, they get full privileges and protections of the rule of law practiced by the modern democracy.

It is much easier to demand things from nations and impose sanctions on them. It is time that good people of the world demand that Islamic nations adopt pluralistic, secular democracy as the only way of governance. How we will achieve this goal is not known. But this is the only goal that must be pursued. Democracy is loved by Muslims in non-Islamic lands. It is high time that they serve the cause of democracy in the Islamic theocracies. If we demand anything less than full pluralistic constitutional democracy in Islamic nations, we are lying to ourselves and selling ourselves short.
