Pipes' huge impact

Reader comment on item: Nine Errors in Three Pages

Submitted by Michael Winn (United States), Jan 30, 2017 at 20:27

Dr Pipes,

As always, your article covers a lot in a short reading time, for which I thank you. One question you raise--no doubt intended rhetorically--deserves a brief reply:

"How does a figurehead have a huge impact?" The metaphor is not mixed. A figurehead on a sailing ship makes some impact against the water as the prow cuts through the sea, greater as the weather grows rougher. You are noteworthy for having a huge impact as you cut through a rising sea of confusion and misinformation.

Sail on!

Daniel Pipes replies:

I thank you for the compliment.

But I understand the ship figurehead being much impacted upon but not having an impact.
