Reader comment on item: Is There a Palestinian People? Can It be Defeated?

Submitted by Ephraim Lior (United States), Jan 11, 2017 at 14:16

A few comments:
1. Daniel, ... not exactly a precise time attribution: "Palestinians (Arabic: "Filastiniyun") also came into use only in the twentieth century."
2. "Palestine (Arabic: "Filastin") as a political unit only came into use as a Zionist triumph... " - The meaning of this sentence is not clear. It should be explained or referenced.
3. I think in this context it should be mentioned that the Muslims' aspirations and noticeable advances in and into the western societies were possible due to the international antisemitically driven support, started, perhaps, with KGB's secret war against Israel and based on British, German, and French deeply seeded suspicion and despise of Jews (not to underestimate other nations' contributions).
4. In my opinion, it was a great mistake to allow the term "Palestinians" to replace the proper one - Palestinian Arabs, thus creating an incorrect understanding that the Palestine is the land of Palestinians and therefore Jews are invariably the occupiers. If I were Israeli PM I'd push for renaming the state into Palestinian Republic of Israel, or something like that.

Daniel Pipes replies:

4. In retrospect, giving up the word Palestinian left it open to the Arabs of the area to pick up. But it's understandable that the Zionists did not want to use it, as the etymology is hostile to the Jewish presence in ha-Aretz.
