Reader comment on item: Why I Rooted for the Turkish Coup Attempt

Submitted by Tony (Zambia), Aug 12, 2016 at 06:31

Most people don't know the following: Military intervention to prevent the state being Islamized is built into the Turkish constitution.

It's one of the eight reasons they can't join the EU (the other seven being: refusal to admit the Armenian genocide; occupation of northern Cyprus; border disputes with Greece; refusal to balance the budget; non-recognition of minority rights; refusal to provide reasonable defence for criminally accused; refusal to recognize the right to protest).

The coup was an attempt by the military to exercise their right to prevent the de-secularization of the state. Unfortunately it was actually a deliberate act by Erdogan, using agents provocateurs, to allow him the opportunity to wipe out all opposition to his tyrannical rule.
