The flaw in this post is the notion that people think. As neuropsychology is revealing in ever more startling clarity, people don't actually use thinking as a primary tool of decision making, save in the rare absence of any preconceptions (see, e.g., Thinking: Fast & Slow by Daniel Kahneman & How We Decide by Jonah Lehrer). What generally occurs is that people decide issues emotionally based upon pre-existing biases. They then employ rational analysis to justify their already preconceived positions on whatever issue is in play.
