Blaming Rushdie is incorrect

Reader comment on item: Is Salman Rushdie Now Safe?

Dear Dr Pipes:

The reader Dona from South Korea said that it was a shame that Rushdie has not used his noteriety as a pulpit to speak out against the notion that he should be put to death. I think Dona is asking for too much from Rushdie: a person under constant death threat cannot be expected to speak much. I am just glad that Rushdie is not already killed and that he has not become a name-sake Muslim to please his tormentors. I admire Rushdie for the latter.

However it is our duty that we support Rushdie and support those who support Rushdie. In Jaipur Literary Festival while 90% of the authors made ambiguous statements or kept quiet, four authors used their time to read passages from Satanic Verses. These four authors need to be commended.
